It had come during the middle of the night; a faint voice echoing in the distance at first, but then it grew frantic and Andy was forced to open her eyes and scan the enclosure of their cabin. She felt herself running to it before her brain even registered what ‘it’ was. Iris message. She rubbed her eyes, not believing what was at the other end of that rainbow. Mom she whispered to herself, stunned. Her mother’s face was before her, brows creased in worry.
“Hello? Hello? Is this thing working?” She heard her say, a small smile tugging at the corners of Andy’s mouth. Her heart ached to have her mother close again; to feel her tight embrace.
“Hey mom” Elaina whirled around, a hand against her chest as she saw her daughter smiling from miles away.
“Andy” she whispered softly as she reached out, sighing when she realized that she wouldn’t be able to actually touch her.
“Oh mom” She felt tears sting the back of her eyes but quickly held them back, not wanting her to think that anything was wrong. Instead, she chuckled and asked “How did you know about this? And where did you find a drachma?”
“You mean these coins?” She held up at least four or five more pieces of them and placed them on the table afterwards “Your father gave them to me and taught me how to do this” She gestured towards the multicolored apparition if front of her, a frown in place of her usually happy demeanor.
“D-dad?” Her eyes widened in shock. Why would he give her drachmas and teach her how to use an IM? “What? When? How? Why?” She asked, biting her lips. Something didn’t feel right “What’s going on mom?”
She saw tears well up in her mother’s eyes, a worried expression etched on her face “It’s Angel, Andy. S-she’s in a coma.”
Andrea felt pain grip her before her shoulders shook in an attempt to hold back the tears. “I’ll be there by tomorrow night” She looked down at the floor, trying to calm herself “Alright. Be careful, okay? We love you” Her mother made no further comment upon her current state and let the message disappear.
She rushed to her bed, grabbing the suitcase underneath when the sobs ripped through her, weakening her knees as she sunk to the floor. Come morning light she would be gone. Uncertain, whether or not she’ll be able to return again.
